Executive Function Skills Building
+ Homework Support

Helping Students Stay Organized

Picture
Executive functioning is partially defined as being able to put “work before play.” Students often need coaching in how to create an environment that maximizes on-task behavior and minimizes avoidance behaviors to reduce anxiety and improve academic performance. Our tutors are trained in the Rush Medical/Neurobehavioral Center's Executive Function Skills Building Program©.

Many students struggle with priorities and procrastination. For some, keeping their backpack organized, using a planner, or creating a system of organization is a challenge. Students who struggle with executive function skills often have difficulty completing or turning in homework; others need help managing demanding schedules and associated stress.

Our students create personal plans with their tutors to increase productivity and experience genuine success in school; these plans are explicitly taught to establish a routine that maximizes organizational skills and time management strategies. Students learn how to put a value on tasks, get started, and follow through. Executive function skills are critical for learning and development; they are life skills.

Our goal is not to be a parent or a friend, but instead, a mentor and an ally for your student.

Improving Homework Habits and
Study Skills

At The Village Tutors, we teach students how to be more thorough with homework completion, encouraging students to answer questions in full sentences, completely read chapters to answer questions rather than simply looking up definitions, show all work, and  create notes that aid in understanding. We act as mentors and coaches, building confidence in the classroom by supporting better independent work habits.

We teach students how to take organized notes, create study guides, effectively use flashcards and online resources, and study for tests.

The Village Tutors all have experience with IEPs, 504 plans, and professional evaluations. We are familiar with accommodations, benchmarks, and terminology. All of our tutors are happy to talk with teachers or attend school meetings at no charge to our families.
